Today while cleaning the top of the espresso machine, I looked around and realized how DIFFERENT things looked from only a few steps up on a ladder. I’m not short but not tall either – I stand at 5 feet 2 and a half inches, respectfully. I often can’t see or reach things at work, whether it be pizza boxes, the back of the oven, the top of the espresso machine, etc. I’m always pulling out the step-ladder to dust or clean. By simply giving myself an extra few inches my world changes. It looks different – albeit a little dustier than I thought.
I used to consider myself a successful wallflower. I was happy to sit back and observe, to analyze different aspects of every situation. I used to look at the same thing from many angles. I used to see things. I used to listen. I don’t know when that changed. I don’t know when I stopped really looking at things or people and understanding them.
I think it’s time to go back to that.
My mind will be a little less narrow and my writing will be all the better for it.
